Design Your Own Clothes: How to Sketch Like a Pro

The fashion industry can be intimidating. For those who have an interest in designing clothes, but no technical training, education, or experience, designing your own clothes can seem like a mammoth task.
The truth is that you don't need formal training to design your own clothing. All you need is the right information, determination, and hard work.
If you're reading this, you've probably got some designs in mind. The first step is to start sketching. Whether you're an artist or not, the sketching process is important. When you are finally ready to present your sketches to a professional (for re-sketching or manufacturing), the process will be much easier.
While you sketch, be thinking about every minute detail of the clothing. Where does the seam go? How big is it? (Typical seams in clothing manufacturing are 1/8") What type of pockets does it have? How long should it be? What neckline cut would look best?
Sketching is really the only way to flesh out and answer all of these questions.
Once you know exactly what you want, take it to a professional, or an art student if you're bootstrapped. Ask for sketches of your clothing. They should be able to recreate your looks based on your sketches and conversation.
With these sketches and a computer scanner, start making your "Specification Sheets" or spec sheets in industry-speak. You can learn more about these, and see some examples, at Starting a Clothing Line. The spec sheet is a crucial aspect once you begin to design your own clothes.
Remember that the most important aspect of starting a business and designing clothes is this: If you can dream it, you can do it.
