How to Sketch the Human Anatomy

Sketching the human body might seem a little overwhelming to any art student who has never encountered such an assignment before.
The human anatomy is so detailed and there is so much involved in getting a good rendering of the human body that this can all add to the pressure of getting it right and can leave you wondering where to even start. There are some great tips, however, on how to sketch the human anatomy that can make the task simpler and much less intimidating.
1. Start Simple
Do not try to sketch everything all at once. That will make you crazy! Pick one part to sketch over and over until you get it right, and then move on. Breaking the human anatomy up into separate parts makes things simpler and easier to tackle. We suggest starting with the skull and working your way down- but any way of simplification will work well.
2. Take Breaks
Do not think that you have to do it all in one sitting. Some people can- but usually not beginners. When you feel yourself getting tense and frustrated, take some moments to walk away and get a breather. When you come back, you will be surprised at how loosening up can help your work.
3. Ask For Help From Experienced Artists
Sketching the human anatomy is something pretty much every art student has to pass off before getting their degree or becoming successful. It is a basic art skill for a reason. If you want some good advice on mastering the sketching of the human anatomy, then talk to some people who have been successful.
4. Try Different Mediums
Sketching is important, but it is not always the medium that comes most naturally to an artist. If you are having trouble sketching, but know you are generally more successful in charcoal, pastels, or paints, then pull those supplies out and try again. Getting the feel for the human anatomy in a medium you are more comfortable with will help you be able to sketch it later.
5. Try a Different Model
If the anatomy model in the classroom is not working for you, find another one. There are human anatomy sketches online, in any store, at medical supply stores, in text books, and many more. If the model in your area is not reaching you, then it may be time to find one that you are better able to re-produce.
6. Remember the Benefits
If you are getting frustrated with learning to sketch the human body, it might be time to simply remember all the reasons you have been asked to do so. You teachers are not just trying to torture you. They need you to master this basic skill in order to be truly successful in future artistic endeavors. Take some time to remember all the ways this human anatomy sketching will help you, and let that add to your motivation to get this right.
Learning how to sketch the human anatomy is hard, but it is also important. Do not give up!
